At start of 1914 war New Zealand soldiers met at an Auckland army camp and swapped songs. One ditty became a love song about the courtship of two Maori people.
A Northern New Zealander arrived in Rotorua, met a girl and they became lovers. He was called back home by the army to fight in the 1914/18 war.
He never returned and the girl’s letters were never returned.At home she sang of grief with this song.

Something you might hear in Hawaii or in an old Bob Hope movie about the Pacific with outrigger canoes and grass skirts. Or something Don Ho might have sang.

Yes, there are many different versions, some in 4/4, some in 3/4, and in quite different tempi and moods. I think I, too, would prefer a somewhat slower pace, when the piece is really sung.

Aloha ‘or written by Queen Lili uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, in 1878 was intended to be a love song. The inspiration for the song came when she saw an Hawaiian woman giving her lover a flower lei during their parting.
But published in 1884 the song became a world wide traditional farewell song. English lyrics wee added in 1923 as well as an alternate title “Farewell To Thee”

Aloha oe.
I tried this tune today after spending a long time looking for the music. I am not happy with my recording as I hear "breathing" noises. Has anyone any suggestions about how to get rid of these noises. I think it might be caused by breathing through my nose. I am using a microphone which is quite close to the harmonica. i usually add a backing track to my recordings which will cancel the breathing noises but it would be nice to start with a clean recording.

“Maori Farewell”, first appeared in 1913 but first recorded in 1927 by Ana Hato. Said to reflect the sadness of farewells as travelers leave. It was written in both Maori and English. However, it is believed to be a traditional Maori song written 1841-1904 by an English travel writer and a part Maori musician/singer.
It has been known by a number of titles so it’s actual origin is doubtful. One name was Po-Atarau and sang to farewell Maori soldiers in the Great War 1914/1918. But now it has been widely recorded by many modern singers, Gracie Fields, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and others.

Thanks Rex. I tried lowering the mic and it seemed to work although when I put the mike back to its original position is worked as well!!
I had a look at "Pop filters". Have you any experience of these?
Here is Filip Jers using one although he is so far away from the mic that I am not sure why?

Never used a pop filter and know almost nothing about them. Filip is a fabulous musician. Maybe ask him in the comments below that video?
