Recently a comment was made about reducing background noise in a recording. To keep that thread on topic I started this one.
I used to get a background noise when recording. I finally noticed that if I had the mic on the same desk as the computer then the noise was there. I had recorded a few things using a Shure SM 58 mic in a stand and there was no noise. I recorded that way so I could go through an amp to add reverb. The mic that connects to my computer was placed on the floor in front of the amp. No noise when the mic to the computer was off the desk where the computer was.
I thought perhaps the vibration of the computer fans was traveling through the desktop and into the mic. I tried to isolate the mic from this noise by placing a folded wash cloth under the mic. That helped a lot. I also tried placing the mic on a small table next to the desk that held the computer. Again, that helped a lot. Another thing I tried was sitting a small box on my lap and putting the mic on that box. Again the noise was gone.
If you are using a desk top computer with cooling fans and you have noise in your recordings you may want to try isolating the mic.
