Hello guys!

Great to see this concept being such a success, we did a lot of travelling already! I am updating the rules slightly based on feedback.

Most important: name of the game is to travel the world through harmonica tunes! Post a video to journey to the next country.

Rules:

1. Countries must border
2. More than one tune per country is allowed and encouraged
3. If no folk tunes from a state or country can be found, it is allowed to skip.
4. Broad definition of folk tunes. No trad elitism.
5. Try to maintain a general sense of direction (no going around in circles between popular countries, welcome the challenge to learn something new and strange!
6. When crossing an ocean you must be able to draw a straight line from one coast to the next.
7. Participants must only post videos/audio files of themselves

I will leave the first post open for someone else to start.

What a great start Sarge! Nice tune and now we have all the states down to mexico or cross the water to choose from! Should be some nice contributions!

Keith, I am sure you know some tunes if we go in the right direction 😉

Good idea but border rule is too restrictive. Better to select a country for everyone to play a tune from. I suppose all US states have there own song but to tie all the fiddle tunes and folk tunes from one State must be near impossible. All my US folk songs are listed as United States..

Canada to the USA so far. Looking at a world map it seems one can cross the Atlantic and land in France. This tune is a French mazurka by Max Heintzen. It was written after construction workers unearthed the remains of an unknown French piper who had been buried with his pipes. It has become popular with French melodeon players. The title is L'Inconnu De Limoise. Here it is played on a Suzuki Humming tremolo harmonica in G.

I can't remember where I first heard this or why I learned it. I just like the melody.

Well played, Sarge! You're vamping is really impressive. German folk tunes are so much fun to play on the harmonica, so I am going to post another german folk tune. Im Grunewald ist Holzauktion. This one did some travelling and is now probably more popular in Norway than in Germany. This is one of our main christmas carols. Sung in schools and curches throughout the land in all of december. We call it På Låven Sitter Nissen. Translated it would mean Santa is in the barn. BUT, in Norway santa has two meanings. We say "Nisse" and this refeers to Santa Claus as in the modern/christian understanding. However, it can also refeer to a traditional mythical human like creature living in Norway. We believed that they were almost invisible small peopele who lived hiding out in the barn during winter. It is tradition to put out some rice porridge for the Nisse on christmas eve for good luck. The lyrics in the Norwegian carol talks about this tradition and how much the Nisse loves his porridge.

From Norway there are a few different paths we can take. We border Sweden, Finland and Russia. There is also the searoute to the british isles, Iceland and Denmark. Where will we go next? Sweden has a great musical tradition for both fiddle and accordion?
