Hi there,

I am in a dilema. My marine band in A that I use for blues is starting to swell beyond reasonably proportions and the 2 blow is way flat.

I am looking at either buying a Hering Vintage 1923 that is already tuned just intonation.

My other option is to buy a Kongsheng Solist and tune it myself. But I can't find any recipes for the 7-limit Just Intonation tuning. Does anybody knows how many cents each tone must be adjusted?

I have some experience retuning harmonicas, but only in EQ temperament.

I would buy another Marine band and tune it myself. The Hering Vintage uses very thin brass on the reeds, they don't stay in tune, and don't take work, it won't last.
I use Andrew Zajacs tuning chart as it is the easiest to use with type of tuner I have. You can find Andrew here: harpandrewzajak.ca, scroll down the right side of page to "Tuning a harmonica with your ears and a simple chromatic tuner". I am halfway finished with tuning a Konsheng "Sunrise" in A for Sarge (19L comp) maybe y'all can make a deal.

Aren't they a pain to open and close with the nails? So he puts his charts online? I have seen his page, but missed the chart. Thanks!

The tuner app I have will let you choose different temperaments, and then you just tune the reeds till the needle is straight up just like you were tuning to ET. The adjustments are made in the software. Then you can fine tune the chords if desired. I got it along with the Piascore app that I bought for my kids to store their sheet music. I think it’s available alone too.

You replace the nails with screws or buy the marine band crossover or deluxe that already has screws (I think), plus for blues you want that particular old blues sound that you get from a marine band. Pete is a professional blues player that's been at it for a few years so if you have a question concerning blues he is going to steer you in the right direction. I hope he sees this post so he can correct anything that I got wrong about the marine band.

Sarge, you are correct, I should have emphasized starting with a harmonica assembled with screws. I do original MBs with screws and barrel bolts, but I am set up to do the drilling and tapping. Tuning apps a great tools for tuning, but like Crawforde stated the fine tuning should be done with your ears. For instance the 1-4 blow or draw octave should sound pure with no "beating" or cavitation between the two notes. Same with thirds and fifths through out the range.

I just finished setting up a *Kongsheng "Sunrise" diatonic model for our good friend (mine at least) Sarge.
The comb is Red Sandalwood, a mess to sand, but beautiful once sealed. If you bought one, then you have discovered the ET tuning. I tuned this one for Jim to 7LJI, because all the reeds were at zero 440 it took some time and doing to tune and profile the reeds. I sealed the comb with Envirotex Lite a type of liquid glass. A Marine Band is a good start because for the most part you are doing the majority of the work on the draw plate and most of that are the flatted 7ths, holes 5-9 draw.
