Having been inspired by the playing of single reed diatonic harmonicas on this forum, I have decided to apply myself to becoming equally as competent.
Despite having played the harmonica since my teens, it was not my main instrument and I spent very little time in practicing it. However, it is now the only thing I play, most often my tremolos and then, only really 'polishing up' tunes from my fiddle playing repertory. In that regard, I am quite satisfied with my current ability. However, whenever I have tried to apply the same to a single reed instrument, I have been far from happy with the results.
Therefore, I am now approaching this new venture in the same way as when I was learning the chromatic harmonica, in that I work through exercises. Firstly, based on single note scales, arpeggios and sequencing and then exploring various chord voicings by moving my tongue block. I'm finding that the hardest thing to get used to is the reduction in size of the instrument and thus the required movements to achieve accuracy. I am though, thoroughly enjoying the process and the feeling of being a 'beginner' again.
Is this familiar to anybody else?
